My Story

Swisher was so scared when we arrived but our other boxer Stella was very accepting of him and he soon found his place in our family.  We all have our special moments with him.  I make homemade dog bones and he will sit at the edge of the kitchen when he smells them cooking until they are done, then he will go get Stella and jump on her just like he’s telling her the cookies are done!  He has a great personality and he is smart.  He knows how much we all love him and are happy to be able to give him a good life because by looking at his beat up body when he came to the rescue he surely lived a life of hell

Swisher came to us having been terribly abused and it was heartbreaking to even look and him and think someone could be so cruel. The night i brought him home he was so scared curled up in this tiny ball in my back seat, i had the pillow from his foster home that it seemed like he was clinging to, he looked so scared when we arrived and i tried to get him out of the car he was terrified, but our other boxer Stella was very accepting of him and he soon found his place in our family. We all have our special moments with him.

Swisher is a talker he always has something to say and Stella does not even bark or she didn't before Swisher came now it seems that a year later you will sometimes see swisher laying in front of Stella "talking" to her and now she will "woof" back so it seems that Swisher has taught Stella how to speak

Today I took swisher to the vet and his skin issues are just as we thought - it is from living the life of an abused animal, other wise known as hell on earth.  The vet said he was clearly chained for far to long and he believes a choke collar and a chain are what probably caused a lot of the damage to his body.  There is scarring on his neck, legs and feet where he probably got tangled up in his chain, struggling and left to suffer.  My vet believes he is around two, in great health and currently at about the perfect weight - 65.4 pounds!  Swisher does NOT lick at all…Unfortunately, no kisses from this beautiful boy!  He is sweet and gentle and such a love bug that adores any and all attention from anyone willing to give it.  We went to the Ellsworth parade on Saturday where he met people and kids of all shapes and sizes and loved everyone he met!  I wore my NLBR sweatshirt and Swisher wore his “Adopt Me” vest which drew all kinds of attention, so we told his story to anyone who would listen!

Swisher must return to NJ and look for a home down south, lol!  We had our first real significant snow fall last Wed night; 10 inches and our boy Swish does not care for the snow, cold weather or puddles and now he lives in Maine!!!  I tried to walk him the day after the storm, he made it 2 blocks, sat in the entryway/door to a business and cried because his feet were cold.  I sat there for 10 minutes warming up his feet and we ran back home and did not venture back out too far until it warmed up.  We are glad the snow has melted off the sidewalk now so we can walk again.  He hits the brakes if he sees a puddle too.
He continues to be a good dog.  His belly has been upset with all the food changes and I'm pretty sure the twins shared some of their turkey dinner with him :)  He has loved all he has met and has a liking for men.  He loves attention and would like to have you pat him all the time.  Someone deprived him of food before but he surprisingly does not gorge himself.  He has been trying hard to learn his way in our pack.  He would be fine in a home with another dog but I think he wouldn't mind being the only dog either.  Swisher is not a very active dog for being so young, just happy to have a soft place to lay and a full belly.
We had a great Thanksgiving with Swisher in our home.  He was a good boy with all that was going on.  I told him how thankful I was he was here and I reassured him he was safe and reminded him his guarding angel Ally was surely thinking of him and was sending her love!!!! xoxoxo

Swisher still continues to be such a good dog, even my husband has commented on how good he is!!  He does do some trash picking/counter surfing and also has some separation anxiety.  He does not like his crate but luvs to go for car rides.  He seems great with kids, was gentle with the twins and never really paid much attention to them.  They are almost 3, are good girls but very active and he couldnt have cared less.  He has done ALL his potty business outside and has not had any accidents in the house.  My old gal jazmine has urinary incontinence, so for a dog to not have an accident here tells me they are completely housebroken!  We will be working on his surfing the counters and separation issues but I think once he gets  settled in and realizes he is ok, he may not get so upset when I go!
